“Record of Youth,” a Story about Today’s 26-year-old Youths

Hannam-dong is an affluent neighborhood in South Korea boasting some of the most expensive homes in the country. Located in the center of Seoul, most of these homes overlook the sprawling banks of Seoul’s Han River. Sa Hye-jun (played by Park Bo-gum) and Won Hae-hyo (played by Byeon Woo-seok) are two best friends living in the neighborhood but living completely different lives. Both have dreams of acting, but Hye-jun, born into a poor family, struggles to realize his dream of becoming an actor while working part-time. On the other hand, Hae-hyo was born into a wealthy family and has already become a top star. And between the two of them is An Jeong-ha (played by Park So-dam), an assistant makeup artist.
“Record of Youth” garnered public attention with its casting of Park So-dam, who became known around the world with her role in the film “Parasite,” and Park Bo-gum, known for his roles in popular dramas such as “Reply 1988” and “Encounter.” Public expectations regarding the drama were already high due to the cast, but the drama’s interesting plot and charming characters continue to attract viewers.
“Record of Youth” is largely the coming-of-age story of Hye-jun, Hae-yo, and Jeong-ha as they overcome the harsh realities of life and fight to achieve their dreams and love. But this drama also contains deep stories about the youth of today and their families, the cost of dreams, what it means when contemporary social classes decide where you belong based on wealth, and what exactly parents can give their children, such as wealth and love. “Record of Youth” is available on the global entertainment service Netflix.
